Description

Name: Hakkun

First Appearance: Sutte Hakkun (SNES, 1997)
Last Appearance: Sutte Hakkun (SNES, 1999)

Background: Hakkun is a cute little drinking-bird-esque mish-mash of a blob of water, a bird, and a mosquito. It falls to him to restore the shattered rainbows of his world by collecting the scattered crystals comprising them. Generally this is Hakkun’s responsibility because he’s the only one capable, which in his world is taken as “the right mixture of good-natured, and stupid.”

Sutte Hakkun was actually a broadcast game from Nintendo with downloadable content, and it made its reappearance on the virtual console in 2010. The basic gameplay mechanic relied on Hakkun’s unique ability to absorb the essences of things, inhaling them through his pointy little beak. By doing this he could take on their shapes, as well as later expelling them or injecting them into other things. For example, suck in a brick, walk around as a brick. Spit it out, then inhale a potion and spit it into the brick, and suddenly you’ve got a red-potion infused brick which moves up and down on its own. The puzzle platforming got trickier and trickier with each level, and players received points based on how many moves they used to finish the level, although there was no penalty for not completing the level.

Reasoning: Sutte Hakkun is a little puzzler that really could’ve been a hit if it was ever released outside of Japan. Sadly it wasn’t, but it WAS one of the few games making use of Satellaview. The gameplay’s interesting but more interesting is the malleable main character Hakkun.

Kirby copies powers, but Hakkun copies appearances, something that would make him extremely unique, ironically. By having a character who can copy the physical moves (the A-Button moves) while retaining his own special moves (the B-Button moves), you’d end up with a very strange character who’d be extremely hard to predict.

The other bit of reasoning to it is simple, he’d be fairly easy to program. Similar to how the Fighting Alloy and Fighting Wireframe teams were just reskins of existing characters, Hakkun’s copy ability would stretch a semi-translucent blob into the appropriate rough shape for the character he’s copying, then stick his beak and eyes roughly where the face would be. He’d also require no voice acting, as I tend to picture Hakkun’s voice sounding like someone trying to communicate through a kazoo.

How Would I Do It?
As I said before, Hakkun’s specialty is his copying, allowing him to duplicate the form and appearance of other characters. Thus his special moves are specifically suited to be practically used by any body-type he could copy, hence why they may seem simplistic. Although Hakkun does have his own unique fighting moves, he can easily gain an additional moveset through his copying, or discard it to resume using his own.

Down-Smash: Stuck Flip. Hakkun jabs his beak into the ground and twangs himself forward and backward, resulting in multiple hits all around himself.

Forward-Throw: Air Pump. One reason folks may want to stick with Hakkun’s main moveset is this fun little throw, where Hakkun puffs himself up like a balloon, and blasts his opponent across the stage with a blast of air.

Neutral-B: Spray. Similar to Mario and Squirtle’s water spraying abilities, Hakkun’s lasts longer and can hit further, even pushing items along the ground. The one drawback to Hakkun’s version is that after performing the move he needs a moment to catch his breath, so spamming it isn’t an option.

Side-B: Inhale/Exhale. Hakkun needs to get in close, but once he does he can copy the form of any character he’s fighting against, giving him access to their moveset. Using the move a second time will spit out a blast of water, returning Hakkun to his normal form. This is his Side-B instead of his Neutral-B to avoid interfering with Kirby’s special.

Down-B: Color Change. Hakkun cycles between three different colors in a jar, blue, red, and yellow. Each color will have a different effect on his Up-B, so you can adjust it to suit the form you’ve taken.

Up-B: Block Injection. Creates a little colorful block under Hakkun’s feet that will, for a few moments, float him along either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally depending on which color it’s been set to with Color Change.

Final Smash: Gigagush. Hakkun starts dramatically expanding, and anyone who touches him gets drawn inside like a gigantic amoeba. When he’s reached full size, he blasts anyone caught out his beak in a huge geyser.

Originally I didn't plan on doing a new moveset for Hakkun right away, but Nook's moveset took up nearly an entire page, so I figured I had juuuust enough room for Hakkun on it. So think of this as a bonus.

I have imported this game for the SNES (not cheap, either), and I really like it. I hope Nintendo makes him a playable character in Smash Bros, but I highly doubt it.
